NHTSA announces initiative to keep elderly drivers safe

Recently, the National Highway Traffic Safety Association (NHTSA) announced a five-year plan to further develop the safety of elderly drivers and their passengers.

According to data supplied by the NHTSA at least 5,560 elderly people above the age of 65 were killed in car accidents last year, and 214,000 elderly people suffered from injuries related to car wrecks. Compared to data from two years ago, the death toll rose by 3% and the number of injuries rose by 16%.

The NHTSA safety plan will focus on utilizing technology to provide elderly people with safety resources. In addition, data collection will remain an important part of the program in order to monitor its efficacy. Most importantly, driver ability, cognition, and behavior will be discussed in public education seminars in order to identify and discourage “at-risk” drivers from being on roadways.
