3 Teenagers cited in reckless driving accident by UW Arboretum Police

A high-speed joy ride got two 16-year-old teenagers and a 17-year-old passenger into trouble with the University of Wisconsin’s (UW) Arboretum police when they were arrested for reckless driving, endangering safety, and underage possession of alcohol.

Around 2 p.m. on Tuesday April 9, two SUVs, a Chevy pick-up truck and a Jeep Liberty, crashed into a marsh after speeding near UW on Arboretum Drive at nearly 80 mph in a 25 mph speed limit zone. According to the UW Police, witnesses saw a passenger inside one of the vehicles disposing of a bottle of alcohol by hurling it into the marsh after the crash.

Initial police reports indicate the two vehicles were racing each other, but witnesses said that they weren’t driving side by side. As such, an ivestigation is still ongoing as to why the two vehicles were moving at such high speeds, especially since the area is very popular for walkers and joggers, UWPD spokesperson Marc Lovicott said.

The three teenagers escaped unscathed and were released to their parents.

While no one was, fortunately, injured in this accident, reckless drivers such as these all too often cause innocent people serious harm.
