Researchers prove helmets reduce spinal injury

A recent study published in the Journal of American College of Surgeons states that motorcyclists are at less risk of suffering a spinal injury if they wear a helmet.  Some studies had previously attempted to prove that motorcycle helmets could increase torque on a biker’s neck and actually raise their risk for spinal injuries.  However, new research shows that with current designs in motorcycle helmets this is not true.

The study used data from the National Trauma Databank on more than 40,000 motorcycle accidents.  In analyzing this data, researchers found that motorcyclists who were helmets were 22 percent less likely to suffer a spinal injury than motorcyclists who did not.  In addition, researchers were able to conclude that wearing a motorcycle helmet reduced a person’s risk for brain injury and death.
