DOT releases traffic fatality statistics

The U.S. Department of Transportation recently released statistics concerning fatal car accidents in the United States between 2004 and 2008.  The report lists the most common causes of fatal car accidents as speeding, traffic, traffic controls, road conditions and weather.  Other less common causes included distracted driving and drunk driving.

58 percent of fatal accidents in the United States between 2004 and 2008 were single-vehicle accidents.  35 percent of fatal accidents involved two vehicles and 6 percent were multi-vehicle accidents.  In addition, statistics showed that 94 percent of fatal car accidents involved one fatality.
