Drinking and driving rate among U.S. teens cut in half in past two decades

The drinking and driving rate among U.S. teens has declined by more than 50 percent in the last 20 years, according to federal health officials with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

In 1991, high school students (age 16 or older) were asked if they had consumed alcohol prior to driving within the past 30 days. Nearly 22.3 percent answered yes.

A similar study performed in 2011 showed a significant decrease in this amount, which dropped by over half to 10.3%.  CDC officials have stated that factors contributing to this decrease may be stricter DWI laws, increased driving restrictions for teen drivers, and less teens on the road due to expensive gas prices.
