Northern and central areas of Wisconsin are now covered in snow after a storm that began on Tuesday night blanketed the area.

According to officials with the Wisconsin Department of Transportation, highways in these two regions are covered with snow and ice and should be avoided if possible.

School districts and universities in the area canceled school today in order to keep people off of the roads. With the snow came heavy winds, which left nearly 14,000 people without power.

Three transported to hospital after two-car crash

Three people were transported to the hospital in order to be treated for injuries sustained in a two-car crash over the weekend.

According to officials in Washburn County, the accident occurred as a couple was traveling eastbound on Highway 70 and the car drifted over the center line into the path of another vehicle.

Both the man, his wife and the driver of the other car were transported to the hospital by helicopter. An investigation into the cause of the car crash is still underway at this time.

Wisconsin State Assembly discusses drunk driving laws

A bill in the Wisconsin State Assembly is currently pushing legislative members to tighten laws on drunk driving in the state.

According to officials, the Assembly Bill 208 was first introduced in May 2011 and is now being addressed. The current law in Wisconsin states that a drunk driving conviction is not a felony until the fourth one occurs.

The new bill is pushing to make it the third one. Families who have been directly affected by a drunk driving tragedy support this new bill. One family stated that they would like even more done. For example, sobriety checkpoints in the state.

WSP increased OWI patrol after Super Bowl

The Wisconsin State Patrol increased the number of police on the roadway on Sunday in order to prepare for an increased number of impaired drivers as a result of the Super Bowl.

Across the state, the number of drunk drivers on Super Bowl Sundays usually increase by 30 to 40 percent.

“We go somewhere in the 70s to somewhere around 112 so we definitely see a big increase Super Bowl Sunday when we look at the Sunday before and Sunday after. It’s a big spike on Super Bowl Sunday night in terms of OWI’S,” Mike Panosh, with the Wisconsin State Patrol said.

Police were hopeful that the increased patrols would deter drunk drivers from getting behind the wheel.

Reedsville man injured in rollover crash

A Reedsville man has been killed in a rollover accident that occurred near Valders after a pickup truck driver lost control of his vehicle while traveling around a curve.

The pickup truck then struck a ditch, which caused it to flip and roll over. Wisconsin law enforcement stated that the driver of the pickup truck was killed due to injuries sustained and the 22-year-old passenger in the vehicle had to be extricated from the truck as a result.

The passenger was then transported to the hospital to be treated for non-life threatening injuries. The crash is still under investigation at this time.
