Guardrail Accidents

On roadways throughout the country, guardrails are in place to protect drivers and passengers of out-of-control vehicles. In recent years, however, traffic safety data has begun to show that guardrails are some of the riskiest types of safety equipment in use on our highways.

Those who are injured in car accidents involving guardrails may be entitled to pursue compensation for their pain and suffering. Contact the Stevens Point car accident lawyers of Habush Habush & Rottier S.C. at 800-242-2874 today to speak with a qualified member of our legal team and learn more about your rights and options under the law.

When Guardrails are More Harmful Than Helpful

Most collisions with guardrails are glancing blows that cushion a vehicle from what would have been a much more serious accident, but in some cases, a vehicle may leave the road before reaching the rail and collide head-on with its terminus. In this situation, three things can happen:

  1. Absorption – Many guardrails end in a straight, blunted tip that is designed to crumple when struck head-on. This frequently results in the the rail spearing through the front end of the vehicle, causing significant damage and stopping the car in a manner only slightly less violent than a collision with a fixed object such as a tree.
  2. Lifting – When an abnormally tall vehicle with a large amount of clearance collides with the end of a guardrail, it is possible for the rail to force the car upwards and airborne. These sorts of accidents are extremely dangerous, as they may cause a rollover.
  3. Deflection – If the guardrail is designed so that the rail angles away from the roadway as it ends, a vehicle that strikes it head on will be deflected back into traffic. In two-way traffic situations, this can lead to a disastrous collision.

Despite these risks, most guardrail collisions occur along the length of the rail rather than the end, and the lives saved by their presence far outweigh the hazards they pose.
