Driving Defensively

You were probably taught in driver’s education to be a defensive driver. Often, driving instructors cannot stress enough the importance of being prepared for the worst. Accident situations often present themselves when you least expect them, and because of that, you cannot react quickly enough to prevent a wreck from happening. However, if you are defensive in the way you drive, then you can greatly reduce your risk of being involved in a deadly car crash.

As defined by the National Safety Council, defensive driving is the act of not only following traffic laws and rules, but also having the foresight to anticipate accident situations and, therefore, avoid them. To be a defensive driver, you should take the following steps:

  • Always pay attention to your surroundings and check your mirrors periodically
  • Always yield to other drivers, even when you have the right of way
  • Follow all traffic rules, including the speed limit
  • Look ahead and notice any dangerous drivers or situations – use caution around them, or avoid them if you can
  • Never trust other drivers – you never know what another person is thinking or what they are planning to do

Driving defensively is something that all drivers should do every time they get on the road. Unfortunately, however, not everyone remembers to take these precautions. If you ensure that you behave safely, however, you can still greatly lower your chances of being in an auto accident.
